According to the Book of Kings, Solomon wished for wisdom, with an understanding heart, so that he could rule his people well. Whether he achieved this wisdom is a moot point, since The Bible goes on to say that he governed unwisely.

Wisdom (1 Kings ch.3). Through his vast God-given wisdom, he spoke and taught about God's creations, influencing many nations (at least temporarily) to recognize the wisdom of God. This is similar to the practice of Abraham (Genesis 21:33) and is what is meant by "And he [Solomon] spoke of the trees, from the cedars of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows on the wall; and he spoke of the animals, the birds, the insects, and the fishes. And people came from all nations to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom" (1 Kings 5:13-14).

King Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes (Kohellet), Proverbs, and Song of Songs.

Did King David give the advice to cut the baby into when both women claimed to be the mother?

No. Soloman was King Davids son. Wisdom was a gift given to King Solomon concerning the baby that belonged to the true mother. The other womans baby had died and she wanted the baby whose real mother said...no take the baby...to keep it from being cut into...while the derranged mother said...ok cut it in halve...King Solomons wisdom was to give the baby unharmed to the correct mother. And he did. King Solomon asked God for two things..one was for Wisdom and the other was knowledge...God gave him both and riches because Solomon was more interested in helping other people with wisdom to judge with true judgement and not asking to have riches..so God read Solomons heart by the words he spoke..when Solomon prayed to God and got the bonus...wealthiest King ever! Isn't God good. Ask to help someone else...you may be surprized at what God gives you for an honest open heart to help others and bless you in this life. (read 1ST KINGS 3:16-28 and then go back to 1st KINGS 3: 5-15 IN KING JAMES BIBLE...THIS WILL ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU ASK...ALSO READ 1st Kings chapter one and in verse 43 you will see where King David has made Solomon the King and as you read you will see that David dies..the two women who had the conflict about whose baby died and whose baby belonged to who that was alive was two "harlots" or "prostitutes" that both had delivered babies around the same time...anyway the Bible is full of great and interesting truth. Enjoy.

Why do you think Solomon considered to be a wise ruler?

1 Kings is very specific about why Solomon was not only a wise ruler but the wisest man to ever live. When he inherited the throne from his father, David he had a dream and in this dream God told him to ask for anything that he wanted God to do for him. Solomon, with a humble heart, asked God for understanding on how to judge His (God's) people. God was moved by Solomon's heart through his answer because he didn't have a selfish request. As a result He (God) responded to Solomon by granting him his wish for wisdom. He (God) told Solomon that he would be wiser than any that lived before him and all who would live after him. (1 Kings 3:5-14)
