When King William IV of England died in 1837 the house of Hanover passed to his great-niece Victoria. Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Goetha and the Queens descendants were stylized and known as having belonged to the House of Saxe-Coburg. During World War I King George V, Queen Victoria's grandson changed the royal families style from Saxe-Coburg to "Windsor" in perhaps one of the first acts from Buckingham Palace that has since become famous for it's public relations between the Royal Family and the British people.
