The Philippines were under the control of the US during those times. The Filipinos were very loyal to the Americans so whatever happened to the Americans at the Philippines, it happened to them. The Philippines were the largest group of islands that was near Japan so it was significant military objective for both Japan and USA.

After the Japs invaded in 1941 the US and Filipino soldiers were overrun and captured, forced to march to what is now known as the "Bataan Death March" in which the savage Japanese marched the POW's for days without food or water and immediately killed any straggler by shooting them or bayonetting them. Many US and Filipino soldiers fled into the mountains to continue a guerilla style war against the brutal Japanese. Finally after a 4 years MacArthur had "returned" with the US Army and the US Navy and the USAAF and after a mighty clash of arms, the US and Filipino soldiers liberated the Philippines from the savage and brutal rule of the Japanese who were many were tried after the war for the many, many war crimes the Japanese committed on Filipino citizens and Allied POW's. Some Japanese who were convicted of war crimes were sentenced to death...as well they should have been...

∙ 13y agoThe US took the Philippines from Spain in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Rather than grant the Philippines independence the US retained the Islands, fearing that if the US pulled out the Germans, Japanese or Russians would take over the Islands, and also because there was a faction in the US that wanted an "empire" in the Pacific, and these people were in control of the US government at the time. As WWII approached there was a plan, though, to grant the Philippines their independence.
Before that could happen the Japanese attacked the US. One of the main reasons the Japanese chose to do this was because of the US possession of the Philippines. The Japanese planned to conquer Asia, and worried that US troops based in the Philippines could interfere. So the Japanese decided to strike first and capture the Philippines, and while they were at it, they decided to attack and cripple the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Japanese attacked both Hawaii and the Philippines the same day, December 7, 1941.
A few days later the Japanese landed troops in the Philippines, and by May 1942 had captured or killed all the American and Filipino forces defending the Islands.
In October 1944 US troops returned to the Islands, and recaptured most of them, though US and Japanese forces were still battling in the Philippines when the war ended the next August.
In 1947 the US granted the Philippines Islands their independence.
Some Japanese troops refused to surrender in the Islands at the end of the war, and a few never came out of the jungle until the 1970s.
