What did the Roman Senate do for the Roman Empire?

It provided a ruling body which became increasingly composed of plebeian members, and therefore more responsive to popular administration. It also provided the office bearers who commanded the armies and controlled the peoples. Even when Augustus took overall control, he still left the settled provinces under control of the Senate.
