A big event was the eating of humans by the lions. Millions of people would come to watch the killing of what could be a long lost cousin, or a family member they didn't know of.
The Colosseum is one of the places where the Romans held all of this, and it still survives in Rome (although not intact). There were at least 2,000,000 seats (there is some controversy on this; some people say around 5,000).
There were also gladiator fights, re-enactments of battles, public executions (either by lions or other means), and skirmished between various exotic animals and gladiators or just civilians.
Besides events in the arena, there were also other modes of entertainment. There was theatre, musical concerts and singing, chariot races (such as in the Circus Maximus), and feasting. Also, people could go down to the baths and clean up or chat, and the wealthy might visit their country manors to relax and be entertained.

The public ones were the races at the Circus Maximus, the various events in the Colosseum, the theater presentations which were always connected with a religious festival, or even the street musicians and singers. The private entertainments at dinners depended on the tastes of the hosts and guests. There was always music accompanying a formal dinner. In addition there could be poetry readings, acrobatic performances, or a mime play, depending on what the host thought appropriate for the occasion. Private entertainments were various Board Games, dice and knucklebones.
