The Mexican War of 1846-48. When Texas joined the US in 1845, its boundary with Mexico was affirmed to be the Rio Grande River, but Mexico said the boundary was the Nueces River to the north of the Rio Grande. After the war began, the Rio Grande boundary was enforced as it has been to this day, and the US picked up six more states (California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado) in the process.

The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) was the result of disputed land claims between the United States and Mexico. Mexico claimed most of what is now the southwest US, based on the claims by the Spanish from whom they achieved independence in 1810. The United States, anxious to claim California and the rest of the West, annexed Texas and sent troops to enforce the disputed border. When US troops were engaged by Mexican forces, war was declared.
