Ambulances, (as well as fire crews and other first responders) were called in during the Lockerbie disaster to treat injured townspeople. There was no hope for the passengers and crew of Pan Am Flight 103, which came apart at about 31,000 feet, and particularly as the last 19,000 feet of the descent were vertical. Eleven Lockerbie residents were killed when pieces of the Boeing 747 fell on and around Lockerbie, Scotland.
