Which country was not a founding member of NATO?

You may want to narrow down your criteria a good bit. Why do countries get involved in other countries wars?

The main reason is mutual defense treaties. For instance, all the members of NATO which includes 28 member countries have pledged that an attack on any member country is considered an attack on all NATO members. They have pledged to come to the defense of all member nations. Other reasons are land, trade, or natural resources. Japan bascially went to war with the U.S. during WW2 because of oil and other natural resources.
