they sang scared music and they prayed

Sounds frightening!

We have little in the way of records of what nuns did for entertainment, but we have a few examples.

Hildegard of Bingen wrote music, wrote at least one play, and corresponded with a large number of people, from other nuns to kings and emperors. Clearly, a nun who wished to do so could spend a good deal of time being creative, and it is easy to imagine nuns entertaining themselves with all sorts of things, from embroidery to reading and writing poetry.

Peasants in a medieval village largely entertained themselves. They probably enjoyed social activities such as dancing and storytelling. Musical Instruments such as flutes and pipes have been found in the archaeological investigation of medieval villages. Dice games were popular. There were some board games as well. Physical games such as wrestling and football were played. The exact rules of medieval football are unclear, but it appears to have been quite rough. Knife throwing games are known from the period. Medieval villages generally did not have a tavern or inn, these were found in towns, but it would have been typical to congregate in someone's house when a batch of ale was ready for consumption for drinking and socializing. Feast days in the church calendar would have been occasions for celebratory meals and a break from work.
