The protestants were objecting to practices in the Roman Catholic Church that they considered immoral and not according to Scripture. The usual example is the selling of indulgences. An indulgence shortens the time a soul must spend in Purgatory before entering Heaven, and were sold to finance building needs in the Roman Catholic church. The advertising (?) slogan attributed to the sellers was "When the coin in the coffer rings, the sould from Purgatory springs".

The original protestant "reformers" rejected Jesus Christ in His Holy Catholic Church, which He had founded, and started their own "churches." Despite Our Blessed Lord flatly stating that "He who rejects you, rejects Me, and he who rejects Me, rejects the One who sent Me. In additional they rejected the received Old Testament as it had been believed in by the Church for over a thousand years, because the books supported Catholic beliefs which the protestant "reformers" rejected. Thus they also started their own religion, thus rejecting not only God, but His revelation as well.

The Protestant reformers rejected corruption in the Catholic Church of the Renaissance period, along with the simony that was rife in Rome, and the sale of indulgences. The leaders of the Reformation then gave some thought to what parts of Catholic doctrine should be accepted, and so rejected the concept of papal infallibility, prayers to saints because they said we should only pray to God, the Catholic deuterocanonical books and the additions to the Books of Daniel and Esther. They rejected the notion that uneducated parishioners could not be allowed to read The Bible without supervision by priests, and so translated it from Latin into the vernacular languages and encouraged laypersons to read the Bible at home.

Do protestans believe in Jesus?

Of course!! The vast majority of Protestants accept the same Christian beliefs as laid down in the Creeds as Catholics believe. The only difference is that Protestants, on the whole, reject certain beliefs of the Catholic Church (such as purgatory, over adulation of the Virgin Mary, praying to saints, the adulation of relics, infallibility of the pope and so on) and regard them as unbiblical and an invention of humans rather than revealed by God, and they also reject papal authority in favour of the authority of scripture.
