The Buddha, was the man in India, 2'500 years ago who realized full enlightenment and thus became The Buddha. Buddha is also a quality that a Buddhist takes refuge in for his own awakening.
The Dhamma, was the law of the ways things are that the Buddha taught after his awakening, and also the path he laid out for others to follow in order to reach liberation from suffering. Buddhists take refuge in Dhamma, the enlightenment, which they can attain through their own efforts, which is characterised as compassion and freedom from worldly sorrow. Dhamma, can also mean the laws of nature, the general truths on which the universe operates, such as the law of kamma, cause and effect, which exists all the time even before a Buddha reveals the entire truth in all its facets to the world of beings, human or heavenly, and which continues to govern the workings of the totality of existence, when the Buddha-Dhamma has dissapeared from the minds of beings and is lost to them.
The Sangha, and going to refuge means the quality of enlightenment as embodied in individuals who have realized it at some level, be they Buddhist monks or nuns or individuals from other sects, paths or religions. The Sangha also means directly the community of Buddhist monks and nuns who have taken up robes to live the holy life regardless of whether they have had any spiritual breakthrough or not.
