Information recently gathered by archaeologists from the University of Texas seem to indicate that a series of volcanic eruptions may have scattered the Mayan civilization. Scattered them to the point of almost extinction.

Not as much as you might think. The Mayan Empire was defeated and the Spaniards took over ruling the country, but Mayan people, culture and traditions (minus of course the human sacrifices) survive to this day in Central America.
