He produced a political cartoon for the Pennsylvania Gazette with the picture of a sliced snake, each part labeled with the abbreviation for each colony except Delaware and Georgia, who were omitted. The phrase "JOIN, or DIE." was written beneath the snake.

It was based on a legend that if a snake is cut up, it would come back to life if it's parts were joined together by sunset. Each part of the snake in the cartoon is labeled with a colony. He is saying that if the colonies do not join together, Britain will regain its power. It symbolizes coming together for freedom.
