push alt+ctrl+del and select file, new task, then type explorer and hit enter If you are still having issues with the Taskbar and desktop icons not appearing, do the following: When Windows XP has loaded, press the Windows key (next by the Spacebar with the MS logo) and the letter R together This should bring up the Run prompt Type in "sfc /runnow" (without the quotes) This will scan your Windows files looking for errors -- you will very likely need the installation CD handy
Desktop
Actually the wallpaper is just the background screen of the desktop and the desktop is where you can see the taskbar, icons and the wallpaper. Wallpaper is only the background while the desktop is the whole screen including the other things in it (ex: icons, files, windows etc.)
The desktop is the main computer screen that is visible when there are no open windows. It usually has a color, graphic, or photo background with icons for various shortcuts or documents. It is also associated with the taskbar (Windows) and dock (Mac).
It varies depending on your operating system, but in general the bar along the bottom is the taskbar, the picture you see is called the desktop background, and the programs on the desktop background are called icons.
The portion of the screen that displays when windows XP is loaded is called the Desktop. It features icons for different programs, the Taskbar and the Start Button.
in my opinion the icons are stored on the desktop
Desktop icons.
A program called Windows Explorer, controls the Icons, The taskbar, and the windows, such as folders, My Documents, and My Computer. Your computer starts up more essential things first, then loads up Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer should not be confused with Internet Explorer.)
the taskbar is the bar which runs across the bottom of your screen. the bottom right is where icons for programs which are running usually appear.
Main features are: -Monitor -Keyboard -CPU (Central Processing Unit) A.K.A Hard drive -Mouse

Don't know if you are talking about any specific application but to view desktop icons, right click on desktop go to 'view' and select/check (if unchecked) 'show desktop icons'.
