Most auto parts stores (AutoZone in the US) will read your codes for free, and attempt (sometimes successfully) to decipher them. They may not reset your Check Engine Light, but if it was a temporary condition, disconnect your battery for about a minute and reconnect it. This will reset the ECU.
If the condition persists, the Check Engine Light will come back on.
You can unhook the neg battery terminal for 5 minutes or pull the main fuse for the same duration. Either will clear the codes and reset the monitors. The thing is though, even if you erase a code, if it is recurrent, it will set the MIL light again. And when you reset the computer, it takes a series of stops, starts, cold and hot cycles for the car to relearn settings again. This relearning will prevent you from getting the vehicle to pass inspection, unless you hit the sweet spot when the majority of the monitors are reset AND before the MIL light illuminates again. Generally when I receive codes, I make note of them, and reset the memory and see if they return. Sometimes they do not.
He is asking about the Maintenance Required Light and not the Check Engine Light.
On my vehicle (Saturn) it indicates that maintenance is required (if the light stays on).
It means you need to take it in and get serviced. Does it to me when its about time for an oil change.
it means when the maintenance light is on
The Maintenance Required Light is not the same as the Check Engine Light. The Maintenance Required Light is telling you that there is scheduled maintenance that needs to be performed. It may mean it needs an oil/filter change. To find out what needs to be done look at the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual.
The check engine light comes on when the ECU detects a problem with the emission system. The maintenance required light comes on when some maintenance is required on the vehicle such as an oil/filter change.

The maintenance required light just means there is regular scheduled maintenance that needs to be done. Look in your owner's manual and it will tell you exactly what needs to be done. Can be just an Oil/Filter change. This applies to the Maintenance Required light and not to the Check Engine light.
It means that there is some sort of maintenance required - you'd need to pull codes to determine exactly what. Performing the required maintenance successfully should shut the light off.
maintenance with engine
Your owner's manual discusses this very light. The light indicates that regular scheduled maintenance is required. Look in your owner's manual for the description of what maintenance items need to be addressed, and how to reset the light.
The maintenance required light only goes on after 7,500 miles since last 'maintenance'. The maintence required light will not turn off by replacing or changing anything, the only way to turn it off is by putting your key in the key slot next to the light.
Depending on the mileage on the car, there are some maintenance requirements to be done by you, or the car dealer. The maintenance light will stay "on" until these maintenace issues are completed. Your owner's manual also tells you how to reset the maintenance light, and outlines the maintenance required per the mileage on the car.
