It sounds to me like your friend is just a little bit confused about what to do in this situation and they may be considering dating but aren't sure what path they should take. You should just wait a while (a month or two) and ask your friend if they've thought any more about you 2 dating and if he/she says he does want to great, and if he/she doesn't continue to be friends. But your friend does sound interested since he/she said he/she it didn't mean you would never date. Give him/her some time.
