During the Vietnam War era (1960s/1970s) you had to enlist or wait to get drafted into the US Army which had the M551 Sheridan Airborne Reconnaissance Assault Vehicle and the M113 APC/ACAV (Armored Personnel Carrier/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle). Both vehicles were assigned to the US Army Armored Cavalry & Mechanized Infantry units. US Army armored crewmen were trained at Fort Knox KY during that era.

Tanks were for stand off gunnery (long range shooting). Assault vehicles were for "close quarter combat."

21st century (today) employment probably now allows for civilian law enforcement "armored assault vehicle crew members" for SWAT teams. Which means filling out an application for "employment" with the law enforcement equal opportunity employer of your choice. The US Military may or may not have such things anymore...reorganization is on-going within the US military. Although the Vietnam era Sheridans and Assault Boats from the Vietnam war have long since been retired, the M113 is still around but not in the ACAV configuration...and the M113 itself might be nearing the end of its useful "combat" life.

At any rate, "enlisting" in today's equal opportunity employer all volunteer US military may still have opportunities for applicants in the US Army's armored reconnaissance units...which in the Vietnam War days consisted of "assault vehicles."
