The main way the British defense worked was

By mainly keeping a good influence in all there colonies millitary wise do lets take ww1 for an example cause Britan had troops in other country's and or colonies some if it's empire helped out and made a big difference In the outcome of the war like Canada and Australia. So it workd like that making a millitary princes in the country you want to protect. And if u do go into debt if u have a huge millitary influence like the British it will be easy to trade and earn more money.
