Exodus 22:18:
(KJV) "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."
(NIV) "Do not allow a sorceress to live."

This is one of a long list of ancient commandments listed in Exodus after the more famous Ten Commandments.

The word 'witch' was a seventeenth century choice, made at the time when pogroms against so-called

witches were still in force, but the NIV translation is closer to the original, which was intended to authorising the killing of those who continued to teach the animist rites. Taken along with many other commandments that enforce the power of the rulers, it means that the author of Exodus was prepared to justify any action to maintain the power of the priests and kings of Judah.

In basic english,

a witch should be killed.

Answer:

(LVB Living Bible): "A sorceress must not be allowed to live." (Ex.22:18)

As when these laws of the Lord God[Jesus Christ, the Creator God of the Old Testament - John 1:3] were written down for His people, fresh out of Egyptian slavery, when "He personally ruled over them" andwas their Sovereign King; before the people rebelled, desiring a man to rule over them as king -- so shall these laws appertain again,to govern all the nations of the world when this same Righteous King returns with the Kingdom of Godto rule the earth for a thousand years.

Mankind was led to distrust his Creator from the beginning [see Gen.3]... and began to exercise and trusthis own understanding and deceptive reasoning capacities. But God commands His people to "trust Him only"... not in other men [or spirits]:

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." (Prov.3:5 KJV)

People use asorceress [witch, fortune-teller,etc] as a "prophetic source" of information of their future. But their power is not of God, nor sanctioned by Him, but of "familiar spirits" or "demons" or "unclean spirits": a place where God would not have His people go for counsel... or to place their trust.

This is a direct violation of the First Commandment: "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me" -- the breaking of which is "SIN" ["...sin is the transgression of the law - I John 3:4]; the penalty and wages of which is worthy of DEATH.

And the Creator of mankind [Jesus Christ] is wholly against anyone who LEADS His people astray andinto the "ways of death."

"...if anyone causes one of these Little Ones who Trusts in Me to lose Faith, it would be better for that person to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. How terrible it will be for anyone who causes others to sin. Temptation to do wrong is inevitable, but how terrible it will be for the person who does the tempting." (Matt.18:6-7 NLT New Living Translation)

God doesn't change with the "testaments." He is the same yesterday, and today, and forever. Jesus Christ; the One who commanded Moses to write His instructions in Exodus... hasn't changed His attitude toward SIN! Or toward anyone who leads His people into sin.

When He returns to rule the nations of the earth with His saints... His Word, The Bible, will be the "Constitutional Laws" by which His Kingdom will be governed.

And "sorceresses" and all others who would lead or cause the nations to sin will STILL not be allowed to live in the HOUSEHOLD OF GOD: in the Kingdom Ruled by God.

"All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be MY CHILDREN. But cowards who turn away from Me, and unbelievers, and the corrupt, and murderers, and the immoral, and those who practice witchcraft, and idol worshipers, and all liars - their doom is in the Lake that burns with fire and sulfur: this is the Second Death." (Rev.21:7-8 NLT)

Why was witchcraft punishable by death in Massachusetts?

Probably based on English Common Law of the time which took references to the King James version of the Bible: Exodus (22:18) says, Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. And Leviticus (20:27) says, A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood (shall be) upon them.

What did Jesus use to defeat Satan's attempts to tempt him?

Jesus used the "Truth" -- Scripture -- the Word of God [John 17:17]."...It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." (Deut.8:3)"...It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." (Deut.6:16)"...Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." (Deut.6:13)

Why do christians hate witches?

Because most Christians believe that wiccans worship the devil because they are partaking in witch craft.More accurately, this is an extension of the mistranslated passage from Exodus.Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. (Exodus 22:18)The original text uses the word, m'khashepah. It was translated in the King James version of the Bible as "witch," which is also the word Wiccans use to refer to themselves. The word m'khashepah literally means "one who uses spells/charms/potions to cause harm." It is common Wiccan practice to use the Craft (spells, incantations, and charms) in the practice of their religion. So, by extension, anyone who practices the Craft or who is Wicca (refers to him or herself as a witch), is a witch, and subject to disdain or dislike by adherents of Christianity.

What does the Bible say about killing?

AnswerThe Bible is ambiguous on the issue of killing other people, offering quite opposing guidelines. On the one hand, the Ten Commandments say, "Thou shalt not kill."On the other hand, Exodus 22:!8 says, (KJV) "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" or (NIV) "Do not allow a sorceress to live." In other words, it seems to command that anyone practising rituals other than those approved in Judaism should be killed. The Book of Joshua contains several references where God was said to command the Israelites to commit genocide.Answer:The old testament of the bible is strongly against the killing of Israelites, except where there has been a clear violation of God's commandments. Killing other people's in warfare is perfectly acceptable. In the new testament, Jesus argues against violence of any sort, even preaching forgiveness for those who break God's laws.

What did god do when he found out that Adam and Eve had disobeyed them?

I'm pretty sure he kicked them out of the Garden of Eden. Because of their disobedience we all grow old and die. 9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. 13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. 14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursedabove all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. 16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall ruleover thee. 17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. 20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. 21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. 22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
