Leptospiria is a gram negative bacterial spirochete causing the disease leptospirosis. Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis. liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death. Humans can get leptospirosis through contact with urine from infected animals or contact with water, soil, or food contaminated with that urine. Vaccine your pet but keep in mind that rats and mice and other pests carry this as well, so wash your hands. People who like to hunt and fish also can be at risk. It is thought that most of the Native Americans along the north east coast died from this disease. It was introduced by colonists but hunting caused it to spread.
