Best Answer

In an automobile vehicle or any other combustion engine, an oil filter removes particles from the oil that may harm the engine.

The tiny particles result from any number of reasons. If the oil gets too hot the contents in the oil can change chemically (or burn) forming particle. It can result from improper fuel burning and/or microscopic gaps in the cylinder or cylinder housing allowing "junk" in the fuel mixture or incompletely combusted fuel to mix into the oil, or from friction erosion between the cylinder and the cylinder housing.
