Carpal tunnel is actually the name of the area in your wrist where nerves and tendons pass through. If the median nerve gets compressed or pinched in some way, this can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Typically it can cause night or morning symptoms of numbness and tingling of the hands (first 2 or 3 fingers) and sometimes pain. If it goes on long enough w/o treatment, you can lose muscle tone and grip strength in your hands.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can make your hands and fingers ache or cause numbness and tingling in them. Depending on the cause of your CTS, (ie Diabetes, Arthritis, repetitive use ect...) your body may be more affected by that condition than the actual CTS at your wrist.

If overtime you don't treat your CTS symptoms with conservative measures and/or underlying cause (say diabetes) it may progress to a more permanent state.

The median nerve (which is a tissue I suppose) passes through your wrist and causes compression on the nerve. There is also a transverse carpal tunnel ligament that is a thick rubber like tissue that closes off the top of the carpal tunnel. Easier to understand if you see a picture of carpal tunnel anatomy.
