It means that either the on-board engine monitoring has detected a fault or the vehicle is due a service. Often. the light can come on because there has been an unexplained electrical surge(spike) on the data bus and nothing is actually wrong. The local dealership can pull the diagnostic codes off the car and reset the lamp.
