Many concepts were enshrined in the new Constitution for the United States. Chief among them was the unique bimetallic monetary standard of gold & silver coin, with specifics entered by The Coinage Act of 1791. Prior to this enactment, states, and even cities had issued their own specie, and there was a dissonant chaos throughout the new nation. Inconsistency and inflation were ubiquitous, and the greatest concern for the framers of the new Constitution. Although initially a revision of the Articles of Confederation was attempted, no progress could be made, and a consortium of needs and standards was soon collected,
with Madison pulling the lion's share of coalescing them in to the cohesive text we now enjoy. The bimetallic standard was so liberating, the exchanges were consistent, and the world coveted our coins, which had to be protected, lest they be absconded with. The ridged edges were developed to curtail the practice of shaving the edges. The best artisans of the world contributed to the designs, and the general prosperity of the commerce, both locally and in in trade with externals becoming greater at a tremendous pace. The effects were so terrific that in one of his many letters to his former aide-de-camp, G. Washington wrote to Lafayette, to wit, "You have no doubt heard of the happy progress we have enjoyed of late, that a short time ago, it would have been considered a species of madness to have foretold!"
