The flag of Russia consists of three parallel horizontal lines, of white, blue, and red. There is no official meaning to the colours as dictated by Russian laws, though the three colours are purported to have come from the colours of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, depicting St. George wearing white (that is, silver) armour, wearing a blue cape, on a red background.

Another explanation is that the three horizontal lines represent the Russian social system under the monarchy - white representing God, blue representing the Czar, and the red representing the peasants.

Another interpretation is that the white, blue, and red respectively represent the clear, bright future, the clouded present, and the bloody past.

Uncle Sam is not alone color-wise. a number of national banners use this color combination- among them France, United Kingdom- in the Union Jack, and revived Russian Federation. the Navy flag, however, dating to czarist times- and now revived looks like a Confederate Flag in Blue and White- uses the Diagonal Cross. The Cross of Saint Andrew- common on flags ( Confederate for example) was picked as the biblical character was supposed to be a fisherman, hence a maritime man! anchors aweigh, Comrade! Oh, this flag was NOT used under the Soviet Regime, which generally avoided any cruciform devices.
