All VIN numbers will be on the corner of the dash driver side (visible from outside the car looking through the windshield down at the dash) and also on a sticker on the drivers door (visible when the door is open it is the middle part between the exterior and interior) and is clearly indicated by VIN. It is seventeen characters long and consists of letters and numbers
Sample 1 series VIN numbers:

WBAUG52090PE72857 (120d 5 door) The first digit is the manufacturer's country. W for Germany.
The second digit and third digit is manufacturer. BA for BMW AG, Munich. WBA
4-7 are the model identifier.
Digit 4 is basic body style. U for a 1 series.
Digit 5 is model data.
Digit 6 is ????.
Digit 7 is market. 1 - Europe. 2 - RHD drive (UK, Australia), 3 is USA.
In the sample VIN UG52 is an Australian 120d 5-door.
For the US market the model codes are:
128i Coupe UP73
128i Coupe A UP83
135is Coupe UC73
138is Coupe A UC83
128i Convertible UL73
128i Convertible A UL83
135is Convertible UN93
135is Convertible A UN03
8th is Restraint type (seatbelts, airbags...) 4 is front and side airbags.
9th digit is a 'check digit'
On US Spec cars, the tenth digit is model year. The example cars are not for the north American market and the tenth digit is zero.
11th digit is the assembly plant. P is Regensburg. 1 series coupes are built at Leipzig, plant code V.
The last 7 digits, including the P are the chassis number.
In the UK, look through the windscreen at the bottom of the screen on the passenger side. The number is 17 digits and starts with WB (denoting Germany / BMW). It will be white lettering on a black background and should be fairly obvious as an official piece of data.
You can use community services like http://www.etk.cc to decode VIN.
The grille, side markers, pop the hood, open the door/trunk & look for the VIN as it'll have a BMW logo.
