The act of calculating with figures is to compute. A person who did these calculations was referred to as a computer. Since the original function of the machines was to perform mathematical computations, the machine took the place of the person and became known as the computer. While the machine is capable of so much more than plain mathematical sums, the root capability is still dependant upon the ability to do these calculations. Look up the word "compute". The word "computer" is best defined as "a machine that computes." Compute means to make a mathematical calculation. And, in fact, the first computers were designed to help solve math problems that were too complex to be done in one's head or on paper.

The word compute is a verb: to calculate or to reckon (a figure or amount).

In its original sense (before the 1940s) it was an activity that only humans did, sometimes with the assistance of mechanical devices (e.g. mechanical calculator, slide rule, sector, abacus, sandboard) but more often by hand (e.g. with pencil and paper) or in their heads.

Only after the development of the automatic electronic programmable digital computer (in the late 1940s) did it begin to acquire its modern sense as an activity that an electronic machine did.
