The majoriy of the modern state became a U.S. territory, along with the rest of the American Southwest. A bit was added (along with the Southernmost areas of Arizona) to the United States in the Gadsden Purchase in the early 1850's
Beyond the appointment of a Governor and the assignment of a few troops to the distant outpost, New Mexico had been largely ignored by the Government in far off Mexico City. Life went on with an English speaking Military Governor. New Capitol came in to the Territory and some land grants were ignored, although many still survive today. Water and access to it has always been a major problem. There was a resistance movement in the earliest years and for much of its long history as a US Territory it was the home of cattle barons, cross border bandits, Apache and Navajo wars, Civil War Raiders and attacks and range wars and rustlers. It was for a brief moment Confederate and it was also the target of Pancho Villa. It retains much of its Spanish, Mexican and Native American culture and is a gem, well entitled to the name of Land of Enchantment.
When Mexico won its independence, all its territories including New Mexico, California, Texas and other US states also earned their independence.
It widened the gap even further between the industrial north and the agrarian south.

Ethnically speaking, by 1900 New Mexico was more Mexican than American; however the white minority had a hold on all positions of influence -- including politics and economy -- making New Mexico an American territory.New Mexico had been acquired from Mexico since the end of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). By 1900, it had already adopted the American law and traditions, but the Mexican population represented 60% of the territory's population, followed by Caucasians (23%) and Native Americans (17%).
