What effect did the cold war have on the Soviet Union and the US?

Well in the US there was a big breech in security, and a rise in McCarthyism as everyone went on a big hunt for communists. A lot of popular musicians and actors were blacklisted, so pop culture had a big gap in it at the time. There was also a lot of money poured into creating the biggest and best arms and weapons to outshine the rival USSR and a lot of money went into the Space Race. Both countries had problems with the culture, ideologies, and technological advancement of the other. It was really all about being better or more powerful than the other.
