When the US Civil War ended in April of 1865, the former Confederate states in the South were faced with a decimated economy. Agriculture had been severely damaged during the war, and whatever small industries they had had also been mostly destroyed. The Southern social structure was radically changed as slavery was abolished, officially in December, 1865, but on a practical basis at the war's end.The death toll of the war was horrible for both sides, however, the South because of its smaller population lost a larger percentage of able bodied men than the North. Reconstruction under the Republicans left scars and white hate groups were formed to murder and harass freed Blacks.
