Franklin Delano Roosevelt came from a prominent New York family, and had relatives who were active in politics, including his cousin Theodore Roosevelt, who was 26th president of the U.S. (1901-08).

Many historians claim that friends encouraged him to one day for president as early as 1907.

With an active interest in politics, as well as a well-known family name, FDR first ran for office in 1910, when he was elected to New York's State Senate. He was then appointed Assistant Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1912, and held that position during World War I. FDR became known in political communities and to the American public during that time.

Before first being elected as president in 1932, FDR was the Democratic Party's vice-presidential nominee in 1920 (with presidential candidate James Cox), and was elected governor of New York in 1929.
