US Soldiers during Operation Desert Storm (Jan/Feb 1991) and Iraqi Freedom (2003 to present) are equipped with basically the same material: Heavily modified M-16 rifles (later models called M-4's), short round bursts (NO AUTOMATIC CAPABILITY); Kevlar protective helmets, night vision devices, body armor, knee pads, and all desert camoflaged. Foods are freeze dried for easy carrying (MRE's-Meals Ready to Eat).
During the Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988: US warships were armed with missiles. The USS Stark (Frigate) was struck by an Iraqi Missile, nearly sinking; approximately 37 US Sailors lost their lives during this attack. During Operation Desert Storm Jan/Feb 1991: US Army personnel were equipped with the M-1 Abrams tanks (120MM Gun), and Bradley Fighting Vehicle (IFV). Infantry personnel were equipped with the new KEVLAR protective helmet and body armor, manufactured in desert camoflage. The US Air Force operated the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Falcon aircraft; the US Navy operated the F-18 Hornet & F-14 Tomcat aircraft. Older Vietnam War aircraft were also used. The basic helicopter in use was the Apache ATTACK helicopter & Blackhawk transport helicopter; The "Apache" replaced the Vietnam War COBRA, and the "Blackhawk" replaced the Vietnam War HUEY. Freeze dried foods (MRE's-Meals Ready to Eat) replaced the old "C" rations (canned foods) of the Vietnam War. During Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003 to present: the basic equipment from Desert Storm is being used.
The only exterior observable "new" equipment for today's 21st century military personnel is the added kevlar protective armor: helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, goggles, and sighting equipment: night vision goggles and weapon aiming aids attached to their weapons and helmets. The camoflaged uniforms are advanced also, during the late 20th century, some of these new camo uniforms were chemically treated to hide from aerial reconnaissance sighting devices.
The food is also different...MRE-Meals Ready to Eat...not the old canned foods from 20th century wars.
