One summer while in England he toured Scotland and Wales with British friends. While visiting a mining site in Wales a miner was injured with a pick axe through his shoulder. Bens friends told him the miner didn't feel pain like they did and he'd be back in the mine the next day. This is one example he said that made him realize that the British would always see the Americans this way.
