There were a host of events that you could say led to the fall of the republic, but the civil wars were the main ones. There was also the entrenched stubbornness of the elite members of the senate in their resistance to change. The revolt of Caesar in starting a civil war was the final step in the republic's fall.

Historians make a confusing use of the term Roman Empire. On the one hand they use it to refer to the territories which Rome conquered. On the other hand they use it to refer to the period of rule by emperors which followed the period of the Roman Republic.

Rome's imperial expansion was not the result of a grand design of expansion. It occurred through Rome winning a number of wars. Many of these wars were unrelated and occurred at great intervals. It was a process which occurred over several centuries.

The Roman Republic fell under the weight of imperial expansion. Its state was unable to deal with the social, political, economic and military transformations which this expansion created and became dysfunctional. In the last 61 years of the Republic there were 13 civil wars. These eventually brought the Republic down. The final victor of these wars, Augustus, established his absolute personal rule, gained a tight control over the state and became the first Roman emperor. Thus, he initiated the 503-year period of rule by emperors.
