There was a combination of several factors that caused the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire. Although these causes had been building for some time, it seemed that they all came together to hack away at the same time. Some of the factors were lack of a strong leadership, an army stretched too thin along the borders, pressure from outsiders on those poorly defended borders, and excessive consumerism.

1) The army became overstretched because the vast frontiers of the empire were attacked at different points. This meant that the Romans had to assemble large armies by gathering soldiers for other areas of the frontier to deploy them at the point under attack. This left the other areas of the frontier exposed, which prompted attacks there by other peoples from across the frontier in these exposed areas. It created a cat and mouse game, were peoples from outside the empire attacked and ravaged areas of the empire and fled before the Romans sent a large army against them or were defeated when the Roman army caught up with them.

2) The Romans had become reliant of Germanic soldiers. The Visigoths, who had been allowed to settle in the empire, at times fought alongside the Romans, but at other times rebelled and devastated Italy several times. Hired Germanic mercenaries were also liable to mutiny or rebel. The last western Roman emperor was overthrown by a rebellion of these soldiers.

3) The western part of the empire was invaded by other Germanic peoples who eventually took over Gaul, Spain and Africa. These peoples took advantage of a reduction in the number of Roman soldiers on the frontier of Gauls along the river Rhine to cross this river to invade. These Roman soldiers had been redeployed to confront an attempt to invade Italy by an Ostrogoth king. Similarly, the invasion of Britain was made easier by the withdrawal of the Roman legions there, at first to deal with military problems in the continent, later to support a Roman usurper in Gaul.

4) The invasions precipitated the political disintegration of the western part of the empire as well as its territorial disintegration. It lost political cohesion and became riddled with political infighting and usurpations. The political crisis of the western part of the empire started just before the invasions, but it then became closely connected with them.

Although the empire experienced a deep economic crisis some 200 years before the fall of the western part of the empire and never fully recovered from it, the economic decline of the empire was not an important factor in the fall of the west. The west could have continued to exist for much longer, just as the eastern part of the empire did. What precipitated its fall were the Germanic invasions, which were the central factor in this process. The great difficulty in defending the frontiers was another important factor. The political troubles further weakened the west.
