It really depends on the Betta. Like if it's a female or male. If it's a male, you could try snails or an african dwarf frog. But if it's a female Betta you have a little more variety like a second female Betta or a few neon tetras. Also though, the tank isn't really suitable for holding many fish considering it's size so be wary of your choices.

The main thing to make sure about getting new tankmates is that they won't cause harm to the fish and vice versa.

Here are some possible things you could put in the 5-gallon tank (including your fish):

2-3 more female bettas

2-3 corydora catfish

3-4 tetras (neon, silver tip, etc)

2-3 platies (Mickey Mouse, etc)

2 oto cats

2-3 African dwarf frogs (NOT AFRICAN CLAWED FROG)

2-3 guppies (NOT FANCY)

Do you happen to have the Eclipse System 3 Tank? If so, we're on the same boat. I have a male betta in an Eclipse 3 with 4 live plants and a rock structure that he loves to swim through and around. My betta is easy-going and gets along with other fish, when I got him he was in a 30 gallon community with gouramis, neon tetras, and Cory cats. After being attacked by the gouramis, he now lives in his 3 gallon tank with 2 Cory cats, which are peaceful bottom-dwellers. You might want to try some of these tropical fish that might do well with our betta (provided there are many hiding places in the tank)

Cory cats

a small school of tetras

NEVER USE-

gouramis

goldfish (goldfish waste is toxic to tropical fish)

chiclids

a Betta fish would be fine with just a goldfish bowl.

Depending on their size. Betta fish love to swim around. A fish bowl is great however the bigger the better. My betta lives in a 5 gallon aquarium. He started in a flower vase but soon grew too big. So again it all depends on size and comfort for your fishy
A lot of people will tell you that a betta can live in a bare and empty large jar, holding less than a litre of water. You may even hear that bettas feel uncomfortable in anything larger. This is a lie, told to sell bettas to people who are not set up to keep fish. Bettas should ideally be kept in a tank of at least 1 gallon. 1/2 gallon is possible, but you need to be prepared to change the water - ALL of it - every second day. Bettas kept in a tank this small will also get very bored if you can't provide any decorations in there due to its size, but a small plastic plant and some gravel should help. If you must keep a betta in a tank this size, it's a good idea to move some of the decorations or swap them occasionally to provide interest. Larger tanks are preferred, with between 1 and 5 gallons being considered ideal. My personal opinion, from a lot of experience of bettas and their behavior and habits, is that the tank decor matters a lot more than its size. My bettas are more active and happy in a planted, well decorated 2 gallon simulation of their natural environment than in a basically bare 5 gallon tank (where they tend to float around on the top and do nothing). They don't seem to care whether the decoration is realistic or not, so if you prefer plastic 'no fishing' signs and bubble-breathing divers, that is fine too - as long as the betta is not in a bare tank. Filtration is not essential and will upset some bettas. They do not like strong currents. If you find a betta who will tolerate the gentle current created by a 'bubbler' or air driven filter (most bettas will) you do not need to change the water as often. Although bettas can live happily without filtration or aeration, they DO need heaters. They are tropical fish that will not tolerate cold water. They need to be either kept in a centrally heated room, or else with a tank heater. If you want to heat the tank, it's best to buy at least a 5 gallon because it's very hard to find a heater that will maintain a smaller tank at a stable temperature. If you can find space for a filtered, heated 5 gallon tank, you could consider keeping the betta with other small fish. A 5 gal with a betta and a few shrimp, or 4 danios, pygmy corydoras or harlequin rasboras, is a very nice display. Do not use tetras because they are too nippy and will damage the betta's fins. If you are in Australia I strongly recommend the AA range of aquariums that. you can buy at Big W. The 'Sapphire' (5.9 litres) is a great tank for a single male betta. The lighting is not suitable for live plants other than Anubias species. Set the filter to its lowest flow. The 'Panoramic' (20 litres) is ideal for a planted tank with a betta and a few other small fish. These tanks both have effective but gentle filtration ideal for bettas.

Your tank is not large enough for just the Betta to survive successfully. The basic rules for successfull fishkeeping are. 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water.(A Betta is a 3 inch fish so it needs at least 3 gallons of water. Not a 'nominal' 3 gallon tank which will only hold around 2.5 gallons in use) :- Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week. If you follow the above rules your fish will stand a reasonable chance of surviving. If you don't, then I can guarantee that your fish will be constantly getting sick and will die much sooner than it should. A Betta is a tropical fish and should be kept at over 75F but under 80F.

Male Betta fish should never be in the same tank together. They will kill each other. General rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water for every inch of fish. Hope that helps!
