The three main physical features that separate China from Europe and Southern Asia are the Gobi Desert, Himalaya Mountains, and the Tibetan Plateau.

The broad, dry steppes prevented travel from Europe and from Russia to the northwest. The Himalayas forced land travelers to circle through the jungles of SW Asia to reach China, but eventually travel by boat became possible. To the east of China is Japan and the Pacific. Although European countries wanted to increase trade with the Far East, the distance around Africa was too far by sea. And even after the colonization of the Americas, there was no reliable route to reach and cross the Pacific. The opening to China and Japan began when the US acquired California, allowing ships to regularly travel from the west coast to the Far East.
