During the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988, both countries were primarily equipped with some Soviet equipment, but mainly Chinese Communist T-59 tanks (Chinese versions of Soviet T-54/55 tanks), and "Silkworm" missiles. Small arms for the infantry units were largely Soviet/Chinese supplied Assault Rifles, along with light anti-tank shoulder fired rockets of the RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) family.

See website: Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988 ________________________________________________________________ The Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988 had little if anything to do with the Gulf War of 1990-1991. The question is very general, and a wide variety of weapons were used, but here are a few that grabbed a lot of media attention at the time. * Tomahawk ---- a much more sophisticated US Navy version of the cruise missile which was first used in 1944. * F/A-18 Hornet --- US Navy fighter and attack plane. * F-117 Nighthawk --- US Air Force attack bomber, invisible on radar and used for night bombing. They dropped the first bombs on Bagdad. * Tornado --- European fighter-bomber similar to the USN's F-14 Tomcat, used by some European countries of the Gulf Coalition. * Patriot --- an anti-missile missile, part of the cancelled SDI of the 80's. These missiles were used in a defensive capacity to protect against the Scud missile. * Scud --- code name for a Soviet ballistic missile used by Iraq, they caused much concern, but like the ballistic missiles first used in 1944 they were not very accurate. * Abrams --- US tank, the hero of the war, designed for combat in Europe but it also did very well in the desert. * Challenger --- British tank, did not perform as expected. The British Army now uses the Challenger II which is much better, and has nothing in common with the first Challenger except the name. * T-72 --- Much-feared Soviet tank operated by the Iraqi Army in large numbers, but they turned out to be ineffectual. Iraqi T-72s lacked the sophistication of the ones used by the Russians, and Iraqi tank crews were not as well-trained as Coalition tank crews. I am told that Iraq had a general in the Iran-Iraq War who was nicknamed the Arab Rommel, but Hussein had him executed for stating his opposition to the upcoming Gulf War. Some Coalition countries used the older American M-60 Patton and French AMX-30 Napoleon tanks from the 70's, yet they proved themselves more than capable of dealing with Iraqi armor. * Bradley --- Armored vehicle used by the US Army. * Warrior --- Armored vehicle similar to the Bradley used by the British Army. * LeClerc --- French tank, counterpart to the US Abrams and British Challenger. * MRLS --- Multiple Rocket Launcher System used by US artillery to counter Iraqi artillery. Watching them fire their rockets in the desert is awesome. * A-10 Thunderbolt II --- Commonly called the Warthog, it was a USAF airplane to destroy Warsaw Pact tanks in the event of a European war, and it did very well at this task in the Gulf War. * AH-64 Apache --- US Army Helicopter also used to destroy Iraqi tanks. * B-52 Stratofortress --- the elderly USAF strategic bomber designed to drop nuclear bombs on the USSR in the 1950's was recalled to drop iron bombs on Iraq, just as it had done on North Vietnam twenty years earlier.

Because they used relatively dominant defensive weapons, such as machine guns, wires and artillery compared to the offensive weapons, such as rushing infantry over the top to be slaughtered and inaccurate offensive artillery this caused stalemates and thus made the war slower and thus changed the nature of the war to a war of attrition
