The Fourteenth Amendment ended slavery in the U.S. Reconstruction temporarily redressed racial inequality in the South, but the South reverted to Jim Crow when it ended. The Transcontinental railroad opened up opportunities for farmers and new industries to push into the West (across the Mississippi). Industry, in the North, continued to boom, and one of the most corrupt Congresses in history brought about an era of unparalleled prosperity, except for Native Americans fighting the U.S. Cavalry on the Great Plains and desert Southwest. Texas cattle barons drove cattle to the new rail heads in Missouri and Kansas for shipment to the slaughterhouses in Chicago, and sale in the eastern cities. All of these things occurred as a direct result of the Civil War.
