Harold Godwinson, Earl of Wessex, defeated Harald Hardrada at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in September 1066. Harald Hardrada had invaded the North East of England from Norway after having been convinced by Harold Godwinson's treacherous brother Tostig. Harald won a battle against loyal barons and took York but was forced to give battle to the King, where his forces were routed and he was killed by an arrow through the throat. The remnants of Harald Hardrada's thousands-strong force left in just 20 longships.
