The western part of the Roman Empire was encroached upon by various groups such as the Goths (both Visigoths and Ostrogoths) the Franks and the Vandals. They settled in, fought their territorial wars and eventually evolved into the present day countries.

This so called fall of Rome was the fall of the western part of the Roman empire. Rome itself was never actually conquered. The fall of the west was the result of Germanic invasions who took over all the lands of the west, except for Italy. They formed a number of Germanic kingdoms.

The eastern part of the empire, with its capital at Constantinople, was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for more than 1,000 years. Historians use the term Byzantine Empire to indicate the empire in the east after the fall of the west.

The Byzantine empire had a period of prosperity under emperor Justinian I, but then suffered one of the worse plagues in history and a number of invasions. The Arabs took over the Middle East and Egypt. The Seljuk Turks took over eastern Turkey and the Slavs took over the Balkan peninsula north of Greece. The empire became restricted to Greece and western Turkey. This is why it has to been called Byzantine Empire. The term indicates the fact that the empire assumed a Greek character as it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of the empire in 620. The word Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the name of the Greek city which was later named Constantinople.

Historians consider the empire to have split in 395, when Theodosius I died. He had appointed his two sons as co-emperors, one in the west (Honorius) and one in the east (Arcadius). That west and the east became separate was not due to an imperial decision to do this, but to circumstances.

The empire split because of two main factors. One is that the two co-emperors were young and inexperienced and powerful politicians in the east and the west took advantage of this to conspire against each other. The other, and most crucial, factor was that the Germanic invasions in the western part of the empire begun 11 years later. The western part of the empire started to crumble under the weight of these invasions and eventually fell. The invaders took over the whole of the empire in the west except for Italy. This part of the empire lost political cohesion and there was continuous infighting and usurpations. The last emperor in the west was deposed in 476.

The eastern part of the empire was not affected by these invasions and survived for another 1,000 years. Historians use the term Byzantine Empire for the eastern part of the empire after the fall of the western part. The term is used to indicate the fact that this empire, after it lost most of its non-Greek territories, became centred on Greece and Greek in character. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of the empire in 620. Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the name of the Greek city which was redeveloped and turned into the capital of the east with the name of Constantinople in 330.
