The English Church went through a period of upheaval as one could imagine, first of all it took a clear stand on a major question within the Catholic Church. One that had clear discussion all over Europe for some 1000 yrs. The question of papal authority. Initially it was claimed that authority had lain with the College of Bishops and the early Fathers in Council! This being so the qustion was asked, where did the authority of the Bishop of Rome stem from? Taking advantage from Henry's squalid marital arguments, the Church in England along with the King told the pope [virtually,] that no bishop had authority in another bishop's see, according to the undoubted canons of Nice!
The church staunchly refrained from adding to the Deposit of faith, keeping the line of the Pauline Injunctions written to Timothy and in Convocation placed it self squarely in the centre of the Catholic Camp.
This was done by Henry and the Church together in limiting the actions of the Pope. Then Convocation in 1536/7 and 42 said squarely that the Church held to the Seven Ecumenical Councils. The parliament in 1559 then placed the Seven Councils as a standard for judging the beliefs of the Church and all was reaffirmed in the 1570 Convocation in Eliza's Day.
What happened was that in a state of turmoil and crisis the English Church placed itself firmly and surely on the side of the Catholic Church of the First Thousand Years, before the break between East and West! It went further and placed itself on the side of orthodoxy and rejected the additions of New Rome,[Trent,} and the protestants.
