When Christopher Columbus first arrived on America when he went back to Europe he spoke of a new land. People like the Penn family Pennsylvania Got permission from the king to start a colony in North America. The new colonies got Charters That told who was a part of the colony, how much tax had to be payed to the king, and who appointed Governors and the adviser's After the colonies had grown, the king took back the charters, and the proprietorial government changed to a Royal Government that was ruled by kings and queens.
Those Colonies are still here and are now called States. They are part of the 50 States of the United States. Some still use the name province and commonwealth from the old days. The newer states don't do that. They fought long and hard to win their independence from King George of the United Kingdom.
