Noting will happen when you turn on the flashlight without battery.
You cannot turn on a flashlight without battery inside. That's impossible if the only energy of flashlight is a battery.

extend the battery to avoid to turn on the flashlight by accident, or contaminate the tube once leak. So some flashlights need to lock or remove the battery to conserve. Like IMALENT SA04 uses 4 *AA batteries, this is easy to buy this size if can not find the original ones and with the lock function to keep flashlight clear and long runtime for both of battery and flashlight.
not sure how you are suppose to...mine went on unexpectedly and had to take out the battery.
