There are usually two threaded greasable joints at each end of a steering rod. If the rod is strait and not bent or cracked, then adding new joints at the end of the steering rod should put it back in business. If the rod it's self is messed up then you'll have to look for another.

What happens if you travel with a broken tie rod?

Easy answer. You can't travel more than a few feet with a broken tie rod. A tie rod is an essential link between the steering wheel and the tire. A broken tie rod will allow the tire to steer any direction with no control by the driver. --Ken

What is the problem with a 1989 Gran Prix if I go to start it and the ignition just turns completely loose and nothing happens?

Ignition switch should be connected to a rod that runs down the steering column to the actual switch at the lower end of the column. Check to see if this rod has become disconnected or broken

What happens when an automobile tie rod is broken?

The tie rod is a part of the steering linkage. It connects your front wheel to the rest of the steering system. If the tie rod breaks, the front wheel is free to move in any direction. Wheel alignment (caster) should be set such that the wheel will tend to stay in a straight line, but any bump could turn the wheel drastically and send your car out of control. A broken tie rod can be a fatal disaster on a highway, especially if your wheel alignment is off. More likely it will result in a car that can be controlled just enough to get off the road and call a tow.

What is rack end?

A rack end is the part of a steering system (rack-and-pinion-steering) that connects a steering rack to the tie rod (track rod/connecting rod) which connects to the wheel. In a simple steering system, there are four parts: steering rod - rack (this is the one that works with the pinion gear) - rack end - tie rod

Will my car make it down the road with a broken tie rod?

Give yourself plenty of room as the steering will be quite erratic and could become completely uncontrollable. Broken tie rods cause lots of wandering in the steering wheel, and make traveling in a straight line almost impossible.

What is a tie rod?

I believe your referring to a tie rod, which is a steering component. There is an inner tie rod and an outer tie rod. The inner tie rod connects to the steering rack which is what is used to turn your wheels left or right. The outer tie rod connects to the inner tie rod and also to the steering knuckle. If you've got a newer 300 series car, chances are your gonna have them replaced because there are some problems with tie rods on these cars. A TIE rod connects the steering to the wheel.

What does a tire rod look like?

What you're referring to is a tie-rod. A tie-rod is a hardened straight rod that is threaded on either end. On the ends are ball joints that connect the steering knuckle to the steering rack.
