Going up hills doesn't allow engine to "lug" and overheat Going down hills supplies engine braking for safety and will prevent brakes from fading and overheating
Turning off the overdrive is basically preventing the truck from shifting gears past 3rd. It's useful when you're going up or down steep hills. answer Dodge Ram trucks come stock with an overdrive, or O/D, function that enables them to switch between three and four gears. When the overdrive is off, the truck operates on three gears, allowing it to pull more weight and giving it more power. When the overdrive is on, the truck operates on four gears, using less power and less gas.
when ur driving in the city it is adviced to put gears in drive rather than in overdrive position..the reason being overdrive is a system that allows your gears or drivetrain to use the lowest gears /ratio for fuel saving cruising, with it off , it holds to a higher gear ratio so you have more power and torque to tow or climb hills..but it prooves to be horrible while driving in the city..
Overdrive is the normally allowed position . It won't shift into overdrive until the speed is fast enough anyway , but if you are going up and down hills and the transmission keeps downshifting you might as well turn the overdrive feature off until you are out of the hills Just adding to the answer : Also if you are towing something you want to shut off the overdrive
When descending hills to aid in braking Moderate hills 2nd Steep hills 1st
Overdrive is for highway driving, which is great for gas mileage. Also, not to use overdrive when going up or down hills because it makes your transmission work harder. That's what I was told anyways.
you can use the lower gears when you go uphills or downhills with hills of more than 10% grade

I am a bit confused. Overdrive is a high gear used for highway purposes. You should always try to use overdrive unless the Jeep is under a heavy load or climbing hills. Thus when towing it's probably best to not to use overdrive.
Bicycles have multiple gears so that it's easier to go up hills, and so you can go faster on level ground. Read this article and in five minutes you'll know how to use your gears.
Overdrive is always on by default every time you turn on the engine, even if last time you drove you turned it off. Given that Mazda does this, I believe it is their intention to use overdrive all the time. However, there are times I would turn it off. This would be when going up and down small hills where the transmission has to constantly change gears. It has to downshift when going up hill, and upshift going down hill. To minimize how many times it has to go in and out of overdrive, I turn it off on those kind of drives. Also, when towing a heavy load, I recommend turning it off, since it is not designed for the extra load.

,gears are used in a bicycle to paddle less and and to gain more speed It is also used in hills because there are steep slopes and if we put it in gear we have to paddle less. Mukul Thakur shimla
