This is a normal physiologic response to a perceived attack in which the tail is grasped and restrained - geckos' tails can normally be pulled off with practically no harm to the rest of the gecko.
In the short term, make sure you are feeding your gecko a high-quality balanced diet - the tail also holds a great deal of the gecko's fat reserves, so if you are not feeding an adequate diet your gecko could develop malnutrition. In the long term, your gecko's tail should grow back (although you'll probably always be able to see the joint between the old and the new portions).
