First you need to check and make sure that your transmission fluid is full. If it's not, then it won't shift correctly, or at all. If it is, then there are three possible reasons that I can think of. First is that the bands in the transmission have gone bad. The other reason could be that the odometer is bad. The trans requires readings from it to make sure that it shifts at the right times. For example, with mine it would only work in reverse and 2nd gear. Or the relay sensor went bad. It's located right above the vacuum booster. There are four relays there, and it's the second on over from the right.

There is a 'range sensor' on most modern transmissions. When it goes bad, the symptoms often include 'hunting for gears'. The sensor is not terribly expensive. Much more information can be found at contour enthusiast web sites. They've been very helpful to me.
