I'm a guy, and I said almost those exact words, and it was to a girl I had a huge crush on. I'm guessing he said it to you for the same reason. Guys tend to not joke around like that unless we like the girl. Here's what you should do. This is actually how my current girlfriend and I connected. She just sort of came up to me, said that she liked me, and asked me if I liked her too. (even if I didn't like her, it was still a huge compliment to have a girl say that to me.) So basically, tell him you like him, and even if he doesn't really like you as a girlfriend, he won't be offended. (by the way, if he laughs, it's not because he's trying to make you feel bad. He just doesn't know what to say.) So yeah. Tell him, and he won't be offended, and judging by what he said, it'll work out ok.

Grow up, please. If you like your best friend, you don't love your girlfriend. You girlfriend cheating on you is not reason or justification for you to do it back.
