Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised the full resources of the Australian military in whatever capacity is required. He has also offered to match the Victorian Government dollar for dollar (5 million each) with a relief package and Centrelink payments of up to $1,000 per family were available immediately for anyone needing assistance. Medium term grants up to $22,000 would be available to people affected by the fires. The New South Wales, Tasmanian and South Australian governments have offered support with firefighters and fire appliances and the New Zealand government has made a similar offer. Julia Gillard has requested that all insurance companies soften up when it comes to assessing and paying out for claims resulting from the fires. While all of this is good, it seems a bit miserable under the circumstances, this being described as Australia's greatest natural disaster.
